The Toyota 86 (Scion FR-S for the US market) has received a track-tuned makeover for a just 100 limited edition units to be sold in Japan.
The Toyota 86 14R60 hosts a laundry list of modifications favored by tuners, though the engine remains largely stock. However, the 2.0-liter flat-four boxer is enhanced by an oil cooler, sport air filter, center-exit exhaust, and stiffer engine mounts.
Throttle and shifting response is improved by drivetrain upgrades like a lightened flywheel, triple-puck TRD clutch disc, quick-shift gear-change lever, and a close-ration 14R-60 transmission gear set from which the model derives its name. A mechanical 1.5-way limited-slip differential helps put more wheel horsepower to the ground.
The body and chassis is stiffened by a three-point strut tower brace that connects to the firewall and a rear V-brace located in the trunk that connects the rear struts to the rear deck. The body structure has been reinforced at 14 points throughout the car, including the addition of a variety of braces welded onto the shell.
The entire suspension gets a work-over too. Height-adjustable monotube coilovers with pillow-ball upper mounts at all four corners are expected, but Toyota also created entirely new suspension arms -- front and rear lower control arms, rear trailing arms and toe control rods have all be redesigned and lightened. Stiffer bushings across the suspension bits, steering rack and differential sharpen handling all around. Brakes are now 4-pot calipers in front and 2-pot calipers in the rear.
Naturally, a host of aerodynamic add-ons abound as well. The roof panel is now carbon fiber to lower the center of gravity, front fenders are redesigned and widened to fit forged magnesium 18-inch wheels. The nose and rear bumper have been revised as well, adding air-splitting canards, a rear diffuser and a giant rear spoiler.
This is serious racing business but it comes at a price, which is about $58,500. However, it's worth noting that converting a the base car to track-spec with these parts purchased individually would likely cost about 50 percent more. The 14R60 will be offered in any color as long as it's Crystal White.
