Our spy photographers have sent us the best images yet of Ford's revised 2016 Explorer SUV.
Introduced for the 2011 model year, Ford's fifth-generation Explorer SUV is getting ready for its first significant makeover. Although still covered in light camouflage, the prototype spotted testing today gives us our best indication yet of what to expect from Ford's popular people hauler.
The Explorer's snout is set for some major surgery, with the end result expected to look a lot like the 2015 Ford Edge. Those changes will include a new grille, more conventionally-styled headlamps and a lower bumper with a few extra air inlets.
The 2016 Explorer will also get stylized LED fog lights borrowed from the 2015 Edge.
The rear of the 2016 Explorer is still mostly concealed, but it appears as though there are changes in store for the D-pillar. Ford is said to be working on a glass-to-glass rear cargo area design that should give the Explorer a cleaner look. New-look taillights will also be part of the package.
Under hood, look for Ford's latest 2.3L EcoBoost engine to replace today's 2.0L unit.
No launch date has been nailed down for the 2016 Ford Explorer, but we expect to see the revised SUV on the auto show circuit within the next 6-12 months.
