Sales of Chevrolet Spark surpass 1000000 worldwide

Chevrolet Spark sales surpass 1 million worldwide

General Motors has announced that its Spark minicar has surpassed one million sales worldwide.

First introduced as the Beat in 2009 for the India market, the model is now sold in 71 different countries. South Korea leads the pack in terms of sales volume, followed by the US and Mexico.

"Our small cars - Spark, Sonic and Cruze - attract more new car buyers to Chevrolet than any other vehicles in the lineup, with more than 60 percent of buyers never owning a Chevy before," said Chevrolet executive VP Alan Batey.

The company suggests the Spark is embraced by younger buyers, with Chevy small cars sales up by nine percent for customers under the age of 35. An available MyLink infotainment system, built-in Wi-Fi hotspot and Siri Eyes Free are credited with helping woo such buyers.

The Spark is also the only minicar to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award, despite the inherent safety issues with small vehicles. The other ten cars in the crash test series received 'marginal' or 'poor' ratings.
