The Honda Civic Si has finally joined the 2015 model year lineup.

The Japanese automaker has announced that the 2015 Honda Civic Si coupe equipped with a six-speed manual transmission will be priced from $23,680 including destination and will get an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Opting for summer tires will cost $200 additional while a Civic Si coupe with navigation will start from $25,180 (without summer tires).

The 2015 Honda Civic Si sedan will be priced from $23,880 while navigation will be $1,500 additional. Summer tires are also available on the Civic Si sedan for an additional $200.

The Honda Civic Si packs 205 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque and comes standard with a seven-inch touchscreen Display Audio, Honda LaneWatch and review camera.

Audi is no stranger to building self-driving performance cars

audi-piloted-driving-rs7-concept

Audi is no stranger to building self-driving performance cars, but it’s latest product makes the TT that ran Pikes Peak look like a joke.

“To demonstrate its capabilities, the Audi RS 7 piloted driving concept car will drive a clean racing line at the Hockenheimring – with full throttle on the straights, full braking before the corners, precise turn-in and perfectly metered acceleration when exiting the corners,” Audi said.

As the German automaker previously announced, it will take an autonomous RS7 concept around Hockenheim at the DTM finale and now the company has revealed details on that concept. According to Audi, the RS7 concept is essentially a stock vehicle fitted with automated controls in place of driver input for the electromechanical power steering, brakes, throttle valve and eight-speed transmission. To aid the RS7 concept in safely navigating its surroundings, the performance sedan will receive signals from ground-based stations to help correct location data and locate the RS7′s position down to a centimeter.

In addition, Audi has outfitted the concept with 3D cameras that help monitor the surroundings in real time, capturing images that are compared against a database of graphical information while tracking reference points such as buildings behind the track. The company anticipates to achieve a lap time of two minutes and 10 seconds and will achieve lateral acceleration loads of up to 1.1g and hit a top speed of around 149 MPH.

The Audi TT family is getting ready to welcome new members

Audi-TT-offroad-concept

The Audi TT family is getting ready to welcome new members.

Recently, the German automaker unveiled a four-door TT concept called the Sportback but that won’t be the first model to head to production. In a recent report from MotorTrend, Audi said it is likely to put the TT Offroad concept to production first, looking to capture some market share in the growing crossover segment. A definitive decision will be made within the next few months according to Audi R&D board member, Ulrich Hackenberg, with the chosen model heading to dealerships in about two years.

As for the TT Sportback, Hackenberg confirmed that it would naturally be built on the MQB platform and can use a five-cylinder powerplant. It would also use a mostly aluminum body just like the TT coupe and convertible and it is likely the crossover would follow in the same footsteps. Hackenburg said he personally prefers the Sportback concept, but that the crossover would be a stronger seller.

Lamborghini can lay claim to selling 3,000 copies

lamborghini-huracan-mega-gallery

After 10 months on the market, Lamborghini can lay claim to selling 3,000 copies of its mid-engined, V10-poewred Huracan supercar worldwide.

Customers in the U.S. account for 33 percent of the total, which puts the company on pace to set a new record with 3,600 units by the end of the year. Lamborghini built the Gallardo from 2003 to 2013 and it sold 14,022 copies in that time, making it the most successful nameplate in company history.

But Volkswagen Group’s Italian supercar company isn’t content to cross its fingers and hope wealthy people just say “yes” to the Huracan.

“In the Americas we worked together with our dealer partners to outline their launch outreach strategy from a new perspective,” Lamborghini COO Alessandro Farmeschi said. “How to make their events and communications bold yet welcoming. As a result, we are watching a success story unfold. As the Huracán arrives in-market, consumers are anxiously waiting to experience this vehicle, which is a direct result of these targeted events.”

Lamborghini unveiled the race-prepped version of its Huracan last August in during the Monterey Car Week ahead of its debut in the upcoming Blancpain Super Trofeo gentleman race series Lamborghini started this year. Currently, the racers run in modified Gallardos.

Toyota has announced another massive recall.

2014-Toyota-Highlander-review-front-1

In total, 1.67 million vehicles are affected globally by three separate issues. The first problem has to do with a faulty brake master cylinder that can hinder braking performance which Toyota says affects 1.05 million vehicles in Japan and 615,000 in other markets. Affected models are the Crown Majesta, Crown, Noah, Voxy, Corolla Rumion and Auris, along with three Lexus models including the IS, GS and LS sedans.

The second recall affects 759,000 vehicles globally which includes 423,000 in the United States. These cars have a faulty fuel delivery system which can result in a gas leak and a fire.

Finally, 190,000 front-wheel drive Corolla Rumion and Auris models in Japan are being recalled for because they were not fit with an idling feature to fix a defective fuel evaporative emission control unit.

In the U.S. alone, Toyota has recalled 5.3 million vehicles this year alone.

Ferrari is officially under new management this week

ferrari-60th-anniversary

Ferrari is officially under new management this week, a shift that will mark significant changes for the prancing pony brand.

“You’ve got to be careful about limiting the ambition of Ferrari because its customer base is an expanding customer base. The business itself is in good hands with FCA, as long as we don’t screw up the DNA of Ferrari,” Marchionne told CNBC.

Former chariman Luca di Montezemolo announced last month that he planned to resign after 23 years with the brand. In his place, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne is stepping to run the high-profile brand. Marchionne hasn’t been shy since then about saying he plans to ramp up production volume beyond the roughly 7,000-car limit  di Montezemolo leashed the brand to. Exclusivity is a key pillar in the company and Marchionne’s plan understandably is raising questions.

“I think that we are good holders of the assets,” he said. “The fact that I have come over as chairman goes to the level of commitment that we have made to this business.”

Rumors that Fiat was planning to sell Ferrari circulated earlier this year after Marchionne said that Ferrari was unique, but not untouchable. That led to speculation that the company was entertaining the idea of selling, but Marchionne stamped those stories out quickly. Ferrari sales are expected to reach roughly 7,200 this year, but Merchionne said in the past that the company could increase production to as many as 10,000 cars per year.

The cheapest vehicle in North America

Coupe Nissan Micra

The cheapest vehicle in North America now has its own race league, but only for those who live in Canada.

Nissan Canada is launching the Micra Cup which will run over the course of five weekends starting in May of 2015. For now, the league will run exclusively in the province of Quebec, though Nissan says it has potential to expand to other provinces in 2016. Each weekend will offer the competitors two hours of track time consisting of: a 30-minute trial, a 30-minute qualifying session and two 30-minute races.

To get a fully race-prepped Micra, participants have to drop only $19,998 CDN, which includes installation of all the modifications. For that price, you get a NISMO-tuned suspension, FIA-approved race seat with a five-point harness, a fire extinguisher, a modified exhaust, high-performance brake pads, a safety cage, a driver protection net, front and rear towhooks and new wheels fit with Pirelli high-performance tires.

Beyond all the add-ons, the Micra Cup will also have the seats, floor and door panels removed to reduce weight and prepare it for the conversion. Powering the car is the same 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 109 hp and 107 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan is preparing to show off a new SUV concept

Auto concepto de Nissan en Sao Paulo

Nissan is preparing to show off a new SUV concept at the upcoming São Paulo Motor Show.

No information on the car has been released besides the photo you see above. From the photo we can see it is some kind of SUV.

Nissan is currently building a massive industrial complex in Brazil to help the brand boost its South American market share. It includes both an assembly factory and an engine plant.

“The Engine Plant in Resende is an important pillar to strengthen our presence in Brazil, and further proof of our confidence in the potential of the Brazilian market,” said Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. “It adds to our Brazilian Industrial Complex and increases our competitiveness to reach our goal of gaining 5 percent market share, to be the first Japanese in terms of share in Brazil, and to also be a leading brand in terms of quality in the country by 2016,” said Ghosn.

The new concept will debut on October 28, 2014.

New product based on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV

prombron-black-shark-teaser

Latvian coachbuilder Dartz is teasing a new product based on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class SUV.

The company known for offering classy interior upholstery selections including whale penis (yes, whale penis) seats is back at it again. This time, they plan to offer a new utility vehicle called the Black Shark, named after the Russian attack helicopter. Dartz plans to announce complete details for the Black Shark on October 19 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of a Russian infantry division.

Powertrains are being sourced from Mercedes-Benz in both V8 and V12 form and the company says the Black Shark will boast up to 1,500 hp. Along with the actual vehicle, customers will also get two Vertu luxury smartphones that work in conjunction with the car to offer extras like the ability to book a private airplane in two taps and access to Vertu’s concierge service.

All models come with standard bulletproofing and electrochromic windows that can switch between being transparent and opaque. It also has an electric shock device to stave off peasants paparazzi and is built to withstand mine blasts. It also offers a biometric security system that uses retina and fingerprint scanners.

Pricing hasn’t been announced for the Black Shark, but you can count on it numbering in the millions.

We are but humble truth-seekers here at Car and Driver, bringing you answers to age-old questions like “What’s the most epic death machine on Craigslist?”, “What do the paramedics drive in Dubai?”, and “Mommy, where do Pontiac Azteks come from?” And that’s just in the last 24 hours or so.

Now we have taken on another one of life’s mysteries: “What would Emperor Palpatine hand out as gifts, Oprah-style, to Sith Lords?” The answer? This thing. A black-on-black-on-black-on-black-on-black-over-black, 1200-hp 1970 Pontiac Firebird restomod that one lucky buyer picked up last weekend for just $87,000 at the Mecum Auction in

Now, we see a lot of lesser cars that have been murdered out (slammed, badgeless 3-series drivers, we’re looking at you), but this custom-bodied mother appears to be the real damn deal. Powered by a Pontiac V-8 bored to 4.25 inches and then twin-turbocharged to reach Bugatti Veyron levels of power, the Firebird could whisk, say, Darth Vader to his Tie Advanced x1′s docking station at hyperspeed. The black ’Bird features a zillion other modifications, as well, all listed on the Mecum Auctions website, should you be curious about what else lurks beneath this car’s sinister body.

Restomods like Singer 911s, Icon Broncos, Eagle E-types, and the like are all the rage right now, and with the entry of moneyed Gen-Xers to the collector-car market, there’s no shortage of people willing to pay big money for classic American muscle, even if it’s not original. (Vader didn’t seem to have much use for things in original condition anyway—ask the residents of Alderaan.) No word on how much this Firebird cost to build, but with cars like the Pro Touring Red Devil ’69 Camaro we tested costing about $250K to build, this car can be seen as a screaming bargain. We hope the new owner is driving it like he stole it, because he practically did.

Rather than mourn the passing of summer - 2015 Subaru Outback

2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R

Rather than mourn the passing of summer, why not instead embrace autumn? After all, if you live someplace with delineated seasons, fall just may be the best one for driving. Right now near our Michigan stomping grounds, for example, the leaves are changing colors, transforming roadside foliage into an explosion of reds, oranges, and yellows that encourage long, circuitous weekend tours.

Hustling a Porsche Boxster through such a landscape—top down, heater and heated seats cranked—is perhaps the ne plus ultra autumn experience. But if you need more than two seats and/or can’t bear the thought of bruising your bounty of heirloom apples in the mid-engine Porsche’s frunk, the new Subaru Outback tested here would fill the bill quite nicely. And you still get a flat-six engine.

Indeed, one of the strongest aspects of Subaru’s spacious five-seater has long been its ability to haul people and stuff with little fuss. The newest Outback’s cabin is bigger by nearly four cubic feet, and the car is 0.6 inch longer, 2.2 inches taller, and 0.7 inch wider than before. Come time for the fall harvest, farm-share carpoolers will be pleasantly surprised by the Limited model’s heated and reclining rear seats. Those folks will be able to stow numerous bushels of goodies in the 35.5-cubic-foot cargo area, which features a flat floor, handy grocery hooks, and even a 12-volt power outlet for a slow cooker full of chili. (Just be careful not to splash any sauce into the nearby subwoofer.) The sunroof is on the small side, which hinders viewing of the forest canopy overhead, but the side windows offer good visibility for all occupants. The very high driver’s seat—more than a few of us were surprised at how tall the car feels in operation—gives a commanding look at the road ahead, too.

Helping to keep safe your friends and their produce is EyeSight, which was part of our $36,835 test example’s $2990 option package that also bundles touch-screen infotainment and navigation with the sunroof, Bluetooth connectivity, passive entry, and push-button starting. EyeSight is Subaru’s term for a suite of driver-assistance features that uses stereo cameras and includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane-departure warning, and steering-responsive fog lights. We found the automatic braking to be effective but not annoyingly harsh or sensitive in its engagement; we still believe, however, that paying attention is the best defense against collisions. The alarm sounded by the lane-departure system is uncommonly loud and prominent, though, so it may startle your comfortable companions in the back seat.

Few folks are likely to be startled by the Outback’s performance. The tale of the tape says that the new version is better in almost every quantitative measurement compared with the previous six-cylinder Outback; 60 mph comes in 6.9 seconds (a 0.5-second improvement) and the quarter-mile is eclipsed in 15.4 at 94 mph (0.3-second quicker and 4-mph faster). However, as with its new Legacy 3.6R sibling, the latest six-cylinder Outback doesn’t feel any quicker than the old one from the seat of the pants, and our tests show that the new car is a tenth slower to reach 40 mph than was the old six-hole Outback.

Blame the feeling of sluggishness during sprints on the Outback’s new continuously variable transmission. Upon more subtle throttle inputs, the CVT does a decent job of mimicking a normal automatic (the prior 3.6-liter Outback had a conventional five-speed auto), but it’s not as good as the likes of the Honda Accord’s CVT, the best of the bunch these days. The EPA says that the new CVT six-cylinder Outback gains 3 mpg in the city and 2 on the highway over its predecessor. Our fuel mileage came out to 22 mpg, matching exactly the EPA’s combined estimate and a reasonable figure for a 3876-pound AWD crossover wagonoid.

The Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive and hill-descent control, ample suspension travel, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance help put remote vantage points easily within reach and allow it to handle serious road imperfections. That’s basically the only “handling” this car excels at, though, as it pulls only 0.79 g on the skidpad while exhibiting plenty of body roll and a fair amount of understeer. Stopping from 70 mph required a long 180 feet, too; for reference, that’s 19 feet longer than the more expensive but analogous Audi Allroad. The Subaru’s steering is fairly direct and true, although it doesn’t offer much road feel. Outback occupants—and those traversing the actual Outback—will notice the bumpiest roads, because the cabin isn’t as well insulated from wheel, tire, and suspension noise as we’d like.

many—should be more than happy with the latest Outback. It builds on traditional strong suits and drives similarly to the last one. The styling is cleaner yet still familiar, crisp, and conservative. The interior has been effectively and tastefully updated yet remains clearly Subaru in design and ergonomics. The matte-finish wood trim, for example, looks a lot better than the unnaturally shiny stuff that came in the previous model.

As before, the six-cylinder Outback is available only in the top-tier Limited trim; the engine thus carries a $3000 premium over the 2.5i Limited. Lesser Outbacks start as low as $25,745. A four-cylinder model won’t hustle as hard, but neither will it cost as much. However you spec it, though, the latest Outback makes good on its promise of unpretentious capability, whatever the season.

Would Cadillac fare better with nearly twice as many offerings as it has today

Cadillac Elmiraj Concept

Would Cadillac fare better with nearly twice as many offerings as it has today? We’re going to find out by 2020 because brand president Johan de Nysschen aims to expand the marque’s six-model range to 10 offerings over the next few years. Speaking to news agency Reuters, de Nysschen recently outlined plans for a product offensive that includes a new plug-in hybrid, a full EV, and a true flagship model to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S-class, the BMW 7-series, and the Audi A8.

The plug-in hybrid would be a version of the previously announced CT6 sedan, while the larger four-door model would be called CT8 or CT9 and contend with the long-wheelbase models of the German entries. We expect to see the CT6 at the 2015 New York auto show. This report confirms earlier news that a range-topping Cadillac is part of the new scheme, but the summary does not include mention of a possible sports car or the chief’s interest in a new family of modular engines developed specifically for Cadillac’s use.
2015 Cadillac ATS Coupe 3.6

Under Cadillac’s naming scheme for future models, cars will be designated CT while crossovers and SUVs will wear XT badging, each followed by numerals that range from 1 to 9. That gives him 18 names to play with, not counting whatever he decides to do with V and Vsport versions. De Nysschen told Reuters that 90 percent of all Cadillacs that will be sold in 2020 are still on the drawing board, meaning the company will have to develop these new models concurrently with replacements for some of today’s range that includes the ATS, CTS, SRX, XTS, ELR, and Escalade. The SRX replacement is due in 2016.

The successor to today’s Volt-based plug-in, the ELR coupe, may or may not be another coupe, de Nysschen said. He also mentioned a pure battery-electric plug-in, presumably without the range-extender in the ELR, to compete with tomorrow’s Teslas.

Other newcomers to the range could include a sedan smaller than today’s ATS that would square off against the BMW 1-series and the Mercedes CLA-class. A pair of crossovers will be added, one bigger and one smaller than the current SRX. The larger one could be a seven-seater.

Both the small sedan and the littlest crossover may share platform elements with the next Chevrolet Cruze, according to the news-agency report, and these new vehicles would arrive for the 2017 and 2018 model years.

De Nysschen came to Cadillac from Infiniti in July after rising to prominence at Audi and generated immediate controversy with a plan to move the brand’s headquarters to New York. He’s not just targeting the German brands in his product plan, but projecting a big push to expand sales in Asian and European markets, although he said the Cadillac crest won’t be ready to press hard in Europe until the new array of products is in place five years from now. Ambitions for China are more immediate, with de Nysschen projecting 75,000 sales there this year, a 50-percent gain over 2013. The CT6 and SRX replacements will both be built in China for Asian markets. He has said before that it will take 10 years to execute Cadillac’s revival, by which point de Nysschen may be ready to pass on the wreath of leadership and retire.

Porsche has confirmed that a diesel-powered Macan

Porsche confirms diesel-powered Macan for US market

Porsche has confirmed that a diesel-powered Macan will eventually make its way into the US market.

The new offering will slot between the base Macan S and the range-topping Turbo trim, providing approximately 245 horsepower from a 3.0-liter turbocharged mill, Porsche Cars North America marketing exec Andre Oosthuizen told Automotive News.

"We are now busy with the development and the engineering," he noted.

The company already offers a Macan S Diesel in Europe and other markets, where the same 3.0-liter oil burner produces 258 ponies and 428 lb-ft of torque. It achieves a zero-to-62 mph time of 6.3 seconds, a top speed of 143 mph and a fuel-efficiency rating of approximately 45 mpg in mixed European cycles.

The diesel variant is expected to be ready for the US market sometime late in 2015, likely with a price tag around $60,000.

Audi has released additional details surrounding its autonomous RS 7 concept

Audi details autonomous RS 7

Audi has released additional details surrounding its autonomous RS 7 concept, which will be pushed to its limits later this week at the Hockenheim racetrack.

The company suggests the "piloted driving" concept car is essentially a stock RS 7, but with automated controls that replace driver input for the electromechanical power steering, brakes, throttle valve and eight-speed transmission.

Precision location data is is a critical element in pushing the car to its limits on the track. Standalone GPS systems lack the required accuracy and consistency, but the RS 7 will receive signals from ground-based stations to help correct the location data and determine exact position down to a centimeter.

For redundancy, the RS 7 is also outfitted with 3D cameras that monitor the surroundings in real-time. Images are compared against a database of graphical information, tracking reference points such as buildings behind the track.

Engineers put the technology platform through thousands of test kilometers to find the RS 7's handling limits for the demonstration run. The car is expected to achieve lateral acceleration loads of up to 1.1 g and top speeds above 149 mph during the Hockenheim demo, with an anticipated lap time of two minutes and 10 seconds.

"To demonstrate its capabilities, the Audi RS 7 piloted driving concept car will drive a clean racing line at the Hockenheimring - with full throttle on the straights, full braking before the corners, precise turn-in and perfectly metered acceleration when exiting the corners," Audi said in a statement.

The company suggests the demo is not simply a marketing gimmick, as the track serves as "the most demanding test bed" for autonomous driving features. Engineers can use a similar approach to refine safety tech, such as automatic avoidance functions, that will make its way to production vehicles.

BMW's next-generation 7-Series sedan may be the first model powered

Next-gen BMW 7-Series to debut with modular inline-six?

BMW's next-generation 7-Series sedan may be the first model powered by the company's upcoming modular six-cylinder engine.

The company's flagship sedan will also be eventually outfitted with a four-cylinder engine from the same family, paired with an electric motor in a hybrid configuration, unnamed sources have told Car & Driver.

Details surrounding the six-cylinder offering remain unclear, though the hybrid setup is said to be good for approximately 300 horsepower and capable of eventually hitting the speed limiter at 155 mph.

The new engine lineup promises to improve both performance and efficiency. The sixth-generation 7-Series is also expected to be lighter than the current model, shedding more than 600 pounds and lighter than the current 5-Series, thanks to aluminum and carbon fiber.

BMW's all-new full-size sedan is expected to debut sometime next year, likely shipping for the 2016 model year.

2015 BMW M3 from a price/performance ratio

Zooming in on the 2015 BMW M3 from a price/performance ratio, you’ll have to look really hard to find a better deal. Throw in the practicality advantages over a coupe and you’re really in trouble.

That doesn’t mean that the price is low overall, though. Not everyone can afford such a car and most people will still go with the regular 3 Series as they’ll have more options on the table.

In this case they could get a 2-liter turbocharged engine that doesn’t crush your brain and sips less fuel but with an M Sport package and still have some of the looks. That’s what the guys from TC-Concept went for when they created this wide body kit here.

The 8-piece kit is so well-designed that it looks like it was created by the BMW engineers and designers and not an independent company. Furthermore, it goes perfectly with the M Sport package and the M Performance parts, as you can see below.

The massively flared rear wheel arches actually give you the impression you’re looking at the M3 and not a random 3 Series. What’s more, there’s now room for wider wheels, like the ones from an M6 Gran Coupe, pictured below.

Round the back, there’s a new rear diffuser as well as new exhaust tips, a boot lid spoiler and a lower stance. Looking at the overall package, it’s hard to say no to it. We’d really love to get our hands on such a tricked out car and drive it around town to see who can make the difference between it and the M3.

Paris Motor Show has offered us the Speed particle that turns the Bentley Mulsanne

Now that the Paris Motor Show has offered us the Speed particle that turns the Bentley Mulsanne into the torque-iest sedan in the world, we’re here to bring you a rather interesting Bentley thought - how about a Mulsanne Convertible Speed?

Before any of you start asking questions on the Mulsanne Convertible, we’ll remind you the project is back on track, as confirmed by Bentley’s CEO earlier this fall.

As for elegantly brutish Speed moniker, we’d be lying if we said we expect this to land on the drop-top. Still, let’s take a few moments to enjoy the idea.

Hiding behind the long hood of the Mulsanne Speed (sedan), sits Bentley’s good old 6.75-liter twin-turbo V8. The six and three quarters vee eight is probably the most longevive performance engine still on the market, with Crewe’s engineers recently taking the unit to 530 hp, which is 25 hp extra compared to the version that powers the standard Mulsanne.

By storm. This is how the 811 lb-ft (1,100) Nm took us when Bentley launched the Speed. In the typical fashion of the brand, the torque is on tap from 1,750 rpm. There are other engines on the market capable of passing the 1,000 Nm barrier (AMG fans certainly know what we mean), but very few actually do it, since this puts an incredible strain on the transmission. Well, Bentley worked on their implementation of the ZF 8-Speed auto and managed to cope with the extra twist.

There’s also an S driving mode that keeps the V8 above 2,000 rpm, which means those turbos are always ready to serve their master, or, better said, to please a chauffeur to an extent he or she couldn’t have imagined.

Bentley Mulsanne Convertible (minus the “Speed”) is the works

Now that Wolfgang Dürheimer is back at Bentley’s controls, the CEO has restarted the plans to bring the Mulsanne Convertible to the market - the project had been... put on an indefinite hold by Wolfgang Schreiber, the man who led the Flying B company while Dürheimer took care of other VW Group business (read: Audi).

Given Bentley’s history, the open-top behemoth should be called Azure, but don’t expect it to arrive all that soon. Bentley has an SUV to launch, remember?

No less than 223,815 examples of the Spark may suffer from a very peculiar glitch

Right after the golden bowtie automaker informed it sold over 1 million examples of the current-gen Spark, the city car is now the subject of a gigantic call back operation. No less than 223,815 examples of the Spark may suffer from a very peculiar glitch, similar to that of the US-spec 2013 MY Nissan Altima.

GM informs that the problem is minor and there haven't been reports of any crashed, injuried or worse as a result of this condition. As it happens, the previously mentioned population of cars suffer from a secondary hood latch striker that's prone to stick in the open position because of premature corrosion.

If the latch pivot corrodes, the secondary hood latch's striker may get stuck out of position, a condition that prevents the striker from shutting the bonnet properly. If the hood doesn't latch as intended, that might lead to the hood opening unexpectedly, which is a pretty dangerous situation especially if you're traveling at high speeds.

The American automaker informs that vehicles made from 2009 to 2014 may suffer from this problematic condition. Although Chevy said it will notify affected owners as soon as possible, we recommend them to visit Chevrolet's European Customer Care page for more details regarding this recall.

I remember the days when my grandpa used to teach me the pleasures of rear-wheel drive motoring in his Renault Dauphine. The thing only had 32 hp, but it was enough to make me fall in love with cars forever. I’m pretty sure the grandfather we’ll be talking about in this story has had a similar influence on his grandson, especially given the fact he owns a pretty hot garage.

This is not a story about some famous man who owns a ton of cars. Instead, we’re here to focus on the anonymous people who act as the seeds of motoring passion.

According to the younger one of the family, his grandpa is “a Porsche guy mostly, but he is in love with his Corvette lately. Hard to choose.” Being American, it’s easy to understand how the man mixes a Porsche passion with a soft spot for Chevrolet.

The old man’s garage

As you can see in the adjacent images, the old man appears to own a moderately-sized garage, which is filled with four beauties. Like we said, there’s an even distribution here, as the four-wheeled jewels include two Zuffenhausen machines, as well as a pair of Chevys.

The Porsches include a 1974 911 (we could easily call this an air-cooled beauty) and a 2003 911, a member of the 996 generation. As for the GM metal, we are talking about a 1962 ‘Vette and something that goes even deeper into Chevrolet’s history, a 1956 Bel Air.

As it turns out, the aficionado attitude isn’t anything new for the man. For instance, he bought both Porsches new, while the Bel Air was acquired around 5 or 6 years ago. The C1 Corvette is the latest addition to the garage, joining the others about one year ago.

We’re pretty sure than when the grandson who snapped these images visits his grandpa, the quality family time is guarantee.

The Toyota GT 86 affordable sportscar already got some minor changes for 2015

The Toyota GT 86 affordable sportscar already got some minor changes for 2015, just 2 years after its launch in 2012. A midlife refresh will probably come soon but more important will be the fact that it has been confirmed to reach a second generation sometime in the near future.

With the Toyota Supra going extinct in 2002, the Celica being axed in 2006 and the small MR2 going down the drain a year later, the Japanese automaker was absent for about six years in the sportscar segment.

Quite a sad thing considering the glorious past of these three badges. But the carmaker is now back with the GT 86, a coupe that is said to bring customers exactly what they need to enjoy driving - affordability, reliability, simplicity and rear-wheel-fun. Recipe that worked for some but made the rest stay away.

The next 86 should ramp up sales

The GT 86 slowly formed a little cult among enthusiasts, registering relatively good sales in Japan, the US and Australia (100,000 units sold as of May this year). Europeans on the other hand thought the overall package is not that good, considering it’s a market where the model is sold at a considerably higher price.

With a fan base formed now, Toyota said it can’t lose ground in the segment, thus confirming its plans for a next generation hachi roku in an interview with Motoring Australia at the Paris Motor Show last week.

“[...] we are pretty serious about keeping the GT 86 pure and keeping a car like that in our line-up. Because in the past we dropped cars like the Celicas and fun cars, and we don’t want to lose that again," said Toyota of Europe executive vice president Karl Schlicht. "[the next generation model] It's down the road,” he said, adding that “the GT 86 has to go through normal lifecycle.”

If you ask us, the next generation GT 86 will most probably inherit more styling cues from the FT-1 concept; both these cars are influenced by the sleek Toyota 2000GT and it would be a real shame to lose such heritage.

Powertrain wise, the automaker might chose to stay with the flat-four unit if Subaru is not out of the game due to its low center of gravity that aids the handling part. Still, the unit should get updated to throw around 250-300 hp towards those rear wheels, either by drilling it to a more respectable 2.5-liters or sticking a supercharger in.

They should also work with the engine bits a little more. Design wise, the car looks awesome as it is, but it’s the lack of ponies that pulled it down. Some dyno runs showed only 140-150 hp reaching the rear wheels and that's just disappointing.

2015 Mustang has your interest piqued the most – the EcoBoost

Aside from the way it looks and perhaps its independent rear suspension, the biggest bit of news on the 2015 Mustang may be the inclusion of its 2.3-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That blown mill marks the first time since the Mustang SVO of the '80s that a turbo has been fitted under the engine of Ford's pony car.

The Mustang EcoBoost is the subject of the latest episode of Ignition from Motor Trend, giving us a great look at the technical, nitty-gritty side of the turbocharged coupe. Covering it from bow to stern, host Carlos Lago walks us through the boosted Ford before taking to the track for some driving impressions, with particular praise given to the low-end grunt of the 2.3-liter mill.

Check out the full video and then let us know which 2015 Mustang has your interest piqued the most – the EcoBoost four, the 5.0L V8 or the entry-level V6.

The Mercedes G-Class is celebrating its 35th birthday in style.

mercedes-benz-g-class-edition-35

The German automaker has announced the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Edition 35 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of its iconic SUV, outfitting the G350 BlueTec and G500 models in Europe with 18-inch wheels finished in bright black, while the front and rear bumper, wheel arch linings, exterior mirrors and the roof sparkle in obsidian black metallic. The special package will only be available on G-Class vehicles with a white, black or silver finish.

Complementing the aesthetic changes, the Edition 35 includes the Sport and chrome packages while the G500 also receives a performance exhaust system. Inside, a bespoke white and black two-tone interior is available, as well as an all-black interior for those that prefer subtlety. Red contrast stitching is a requisite part of the package and will be exclusive to the Edition 35.

As part of the celebration, Mercedes also honored Gunther Holtorf and his wife Christine, which have traveled nearly 559,000 miles and 215 countries with their G300 GD. The marathon vehicle will be on display to visitors in the Classic Cars section of the Mercedes-Benz Museum starting October 21. The G300 GD, nicknamed “Otto,” will also be immortalized in the Guinness World Records.

Mercedes has not confirmed whether the G-Class Edition 35 will make it to America, but it is intended to be a global model with each market branding its own name for the special edition.

The German automaker has confirmed that it will add a Macan diesel model to the U.S

porsche-macan

The Porsche  Macan is off to a hot start and in an effort to push things further, the company will expand its lineup in the U.S.

The German automaker has confirmed that it will add a Macan diesel model to the U.S. in a little over a year and will use a V6 powerplant with about 245 hp. The news comes from the vice president of marketing for Porsche Cars North America in an interview with Automotive News, who also revealed that the model will be priced conservatively at under $60,000. That would slot the Macan diesel in between the Macan S and the Macan Turbo, which are priced $50,895 and $73,295 respectively.

The model will feature a version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 diesel engine that’s currently offered in Europe and could possibly make its debut at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show. Sales will likely begin either late next year or early 2016.

Stunning the Mercedes-AMG GT S

mercedes-amg-gt

Now that you’ve seen how stunning the Mercedes-AMG GT S, how does it sound?

It’s true that Mercedes went the downsized and turbocharged route with its newest sports car, but that doesn’t mean the GT won’t be an aggressive performance machine. With a 4.0-liter turbocharged engine under the hood, we already know that the GT S will provide 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, but will its exhaust note compliment that performance?

Now we have our first glimpse of what the venerable sports car sounds like and it’s a growl that any automotive enthusiast can appreciate. Those that were still skeptical that the turbocharged V8 wouldn’t sound as menacing as a naturally aspirated engine, fear no more.

Mercedes-Benz GLK launched, they were slightly funky utes at what was then the small end of the luxury-SUV spectrum

2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4MATIC

When the BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLK launched, they were slightly funky utes at what was then the small end of the luxury-SUV spectrum. Each took a moment to find solid footing—the BMW in its second generation and the GLK at its midcycle refresh—and each now come at prices that leave room for smaller, less expensive newcomers. BMW threw its X1 into that breach for 2013, offering up a decidedly wagon-oid experience in a package that looks like a Bavarian Subaru Forester. Mercedes has responded with the GLA250, a turbocharged hatch-on-stilts built on the same bones as the CLA-class.

From the nose, the GLA looks fully Benz modern, featuring a blunt, upright prow, swept-back headlights, and the all-important emblem centered proudly in the two-bar grille. From the rear? It’s just a hatchback, one with massive, protruding taillights that look like symmetrical cybernetic boils. As with the B-class Electric Drive, the chrome bar meant to tie the taillamps together instead appears a bit like aftermarket kit. The rear is where this car’s otherwise handsome exterior terminates with a whimper.

We once ran across a German who described an interior as “spartaneous.” While our test car featured the optional interior upgrade with a fancy, top-stitched brown-leather dash pad, the spartaneousness—to coin an even non-wordier word—of this cheap-seats Benz interior shines through, as it does with the GLA’s platform siblings. (Even the brand’s COMAND infotainment system, optional on the GLA250, still isn't as intuitive as Audi’s MMI or BMW’s iDrive, and the user-interface design continues to resemble a junior-college design project.) It’d take a few more hides—and a higher grade of plastic—to raise the GLA’s cabin to C-class levels of specialness.

Of course, the embiggened C now starts at $41,325 and the GLK350 at $38,825. The GLA begins at $34,225. Seventy-one, ah, C-notes will buy a man some quantity of plastic and leather. Benz’s tagline for this vehicle is “Our smallest SUV is the next big thing. (We don’t make a next-best thing.)” When it comes to the interior, that claim might be stretching the truth just a smidge. A Buick Encore may not have the fancy leather dash-topper, but its innards feel less hollow. More directly, although the aging X1 hails from an era when BMW still wasn’t doing fancy cabins, the GLA feels more substantial.

Featuring a 208-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder pushing power through a drama-free seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, our all-wheel-drive GLA scooted to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and circled the skidpad at 0.87 g. What those numbers suggest is just about what you get—easy entry onto freeways, paired with enough passing power and agility to dice through the minivan van squad en route to the lacrosse field. Where the BMW feels stout, muscular, and taut, content to shoulder-check its way through a corner, the Mercedes is more apt to tiptoe.

Its numbers aren’t far off those of its sedan sibling—only one-tenth slower to 60, two-tenths slower through the quarter-mile, and three-hundredths of a g less grippy around our 300-foot-diameter circle. The 70-to-0-mph stopping distance of 155 feet warrants autobahn-worthy accolades, but the pedal went soft after four or five stops and our tester noted moderate fade. So it stops well, as long as you don’t ask it to do so too often.

The thing with the GLA is that it has no particular party favors. It’s a functional, simple runabout that happens to wear the three-pointed star and is priced accordingly. While bigger-brother GLK migrated into the world of real Benzes, the GLA and its platform-mates are tasked with holding important, ever-shifting ground: the conquest-customer beachhead. With the new Lexus NX and Audi’s Q3 now here, luxury aspirants are suddenly deluged with choices. If you’re hell-bent on an entry-luxe small ute, the GLA is a decent choice, but our inner rationalists might posit this pertinent question: Wouldn’t you be as ably served by a Volkswagen GTI?

Daniel Sexton Gurney, age 83, is most certainly one of the giants of 20th-century motorsport

Gurney-Yates Ferrari Daytona

Daniel Sexton Gurney, age 83, is most certainly one of the giants of 20th-century motorsport. One of the multidisciplinary greats in an era of all-rounders that included Parnelli Jones, A.J. Foyt, and Mark Donohue, Gurney raced at Indy, competed in sports cars, raced in the hairball Can-Am series, and also contested in Pony Car War–era Trans-Am. He even notched a number of NASCAR victories.

Of course, we at C/D fondly remember him for his 1971 transcontinental jaunt with Brock Yates. Making fine use of a Ferrari Daytona (pictured above) supplied by Kirk F. White, the pair transited America in 35 hours and 54 minutes to win that year’s Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. You may well own one of our “Dan Gurney For President” decals.

His most enduring distinction, however, may be that he won at Spa in the impossibly lovely Eagle F1, making him the only American driver to win an F1 Grand Prix in a car of his own design and construction. Built by his All-American Racers crew, which went on to run very successful prototype and GT programs for Toyota in the 1980s, AAR is as much a part of the fabric of Yankee motorsport as Holman-Moody, Smokey’s Best Damn Garage in Town, or Shelby American.

For all of this and much, much more, The Henry Ford Museum is bestowing the Edison-Ford medal upon Gurney on October 29. He’s only the second recipient since the award was established in 1989; the first was given to W. Edwards Deming, the statistician whose postwar work in Japan was instrumental in the elevation of the Land of the Rising Sun to the level of an industrial juggernaut.

Deming’s work may have inspired a nation’s industrial leadership, but Gurney inspired us, and continues to do so this day. Congratulations, Dan. We can’t think of anybody more deserving.

Jaguar advertising has been on a roll lately, with the whole “British villains drive Jags”

Jaguar Method to Our Madness commercial

Jaguar advertising has been on a roll lately, with the whole “British villains drive Jags” thing resonating well with the brand’s outsider market position and its extremely seductive lineup. The firm’s latest commercial, however, might just top them all, with a treasure trove of intelligently sinister references, as well as a confident swagger befitting a brand on the rise.

Mixing elements from the villainous series of spots, this newest ad, dubbed “British Intel,” sees a dashing young man entering what looks like an evil mastermind’s underground lair. The clever references begin immediately: The man’s character is based on Q, James Bond’s MI6 tech guru, only he’s appropriately evil; his turns of phrase mimic those of Q’s, but come across in decidedly unheroic terms. He outlines Jag’s signature features using an appropriately sinister holographic interface from a London Underground tube service bay. (Q’s laboratory has been located in a similar Underground location in some Bond films.)

“Every mastermind needs a button that wreaks havoc,” our sneaky presenter says before an engine starter button materializes and a wicked exhaust note cracks. This is followed by: ”If you need to get away at light speed, you can’t beat an aluminum chassis,” and “With power like this comes great opportunity.” At this point, we are given a glimpse of the new XE sedan before the presenter throws a sheet back over it before adding, “Not yet, my pretty one.”

It’s a fantastic and entertaining spot that communicates most of what sets Jaguar apart from the usual luxury brands. The spot ends with evil Q accelerating down an empty London Underground tunnel in an F-type R coupe and exclaiming, “Oh yes, there’s a method to our madness.” Fans of British obscurities will enjoy that closing shot, since the Jaguar drives through London’s closed-down Aldwych Tube station, which marks the end of a one-stop, dead-end Underground line beneath Westminster. During World War II, the station and its attendant tunnels and anterooms were used to store valuables from the British Museum. Later, one of its two platforms was closed and the tracks removed, making it an ideal place from which to orchestrate a dark plot . . .

Nissan is firing up the diesel-powered rumor mill again

Nissan Titan

Nissan is firing up the diesel-powered rumor mill again. After years of teasing a Cummins/Nissan truck hookup that never seems to come to fruition, the maker took to the Twittersphere today with an image that strongly suggests the two have been busy getting busy.

Featuring the official logos of both Cummins and Nissan, the image is accompanied by the intentionally provocative and viral-ready hashtag #CUMMINSSOON. (Note: The first ‘s’ is critical if you hope to apply it to the right topic.)

You don’t need to be Freud to figure that one out. Or maybe you do. Whatever the case, this on-again/off-again relationship has been going on since Nissan told us they were considering a diesel for the Titan back in 2008. Of course at that time, the new Titan was slated to be a badge-engineered version of the Ram, and Chrysler’s bankruptcy pretty much squashed those plans, leaving Nissan with an aging Titan to nurse until a new model could be readied.

Fast forward to 2013, when it shared some details on a 5.0-liter Cummins V-8 turbo-diesel mill that is probably the basis for the engine that will ultimately see the light of day in the Titan. (Just a few months ago, Nissan let us drive a Frontier powered by a 2.8-liter Cummins V-6 turbo-diesel, too.) Given the “soon” part of the hashtag, we’re figuring that the oil-burner will show up on the 2016 Titan, which is due soon and likely will be a heavily reworked version of the existing truck.

Apparently the union isn’t exclusive, as rumors indicate that this engine could find its way under the hood of the Toyota Tundra, as well. But with the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel winning fans and posting impressive efficiency numbers, the time is right. Let’s just hope the diesel Titan delivers.

A Lexus-built Toyobaru would make for a pretty nice proposal

One Scion FR-S owner in Virginia decided to give the Toyobaru project and interesting twist, fitting Lexus badges to his car, as you can see above. The move has obviously split opinions online, with certain people labeling this under “fake”, while others approved the trolling.

We’re with the second camp here, for a pretty simple reason. Anybody passionate enough to care about the badge on this FR-S knows there’s no L-badged version of the car, so even is the owner was trying to trick people into believing he’s driving something more expensive, the scheme would be a failure.

Still, as a trolling move, this is pretty cool, as one or two aficionados might be caught wondering whether Lexus has decided to give the world its take on the compact sportscar matter.

Silly debates aside, a Lexus version of the Toyobaru wouldn’t be a bad idea. Sure, it wouldn’t make too much commercial sense, since we already have the Toyota GT 86, Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S, so the thing would appeal to an extremely tight niche.

Nonetheless, those customers would be truly happy and that’s because the affordable tag of the Toyobaru has deprived the car of certain amenities that would enlarge its appeal.

The premium additions to the cabin are sine qua non here, but the transformation could go beyond this. Quite a lot of owners have complained about the lack of grunt and a bigger engine would solve this matter.

Toyota isn’t quite a fan of turbocharging, so the natural aspiration would be kept, which means the character of the car wouldn’t be diminished. For instance, the 3.5-liter V6 on the IS 350 would delivers 306 horses to those rear wheels.

In case you’re wondering how this would affect the balance of the sportscar, you should know the D1 drifting championship enchants its spectators with a GT 86 powered by the IS F’s 5-liter V8. We admit, this is a bit of an exaggeration, but it all goes to show what happens when the Toyobaru chassis receives serious work.

We’re not expecting Lexus to put its badge on a Toyobaru anytime soon though, so for now the Virginia trolling is all we have.

Sleep Innovations Michael Fux took newly bought Rolls-Royce Wraith

When you’re a 70-year old successful entrepreneur you’re not going to drive like common people, of course. But the founder of mattress company Sleep Innovations Michael Fux took the whole game to an entire new level with his newly bought Rolls-Royce Wraith he had entirely finished in lime green, both inside and outside.

Not that we’re not fond of the color, but it would seem this one went a bit to far, making the luxury car look rather as a spaceship on wheels of some sort, than an exclusive ride. The British automaker has recently released pictures with the freshly finished Wraith, quoting it was specially designed for entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Fux, a thing the company even engraved on the car.

Call it an Avatar theme or Amazon forest color, but this one is definitely what you call a personalized Rolls-Royce. The entire inside of the car was covered with green and even the steering wheel was covered in turquoise. Another special feature the hundred-thousand-dollar exclusive car comes with is its iconic Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament ,which was shaped out of crystal.

It’s not the first time we write about a green wrap, of course, but Fux’ Wraith could make for the first one that also has its entire interior finished in the same color. Some people might find the color a bit too loud for a Rolls Royce, but the company is actually offering thousands of different combinations and interior finishes. In fact, we can expect to see even crazier ideas in the near future, so stay close.

VW Beetle Covered in Coins Is so "Money"

Of all the bizarre things cars have been covered in, coins seem to be everyone's favorites. A new Volkswagen Beetle coupe covered in no less than 10,000 shiny new pennies... of sorts... has popped up on the Chinese car scene.

The car was spotted in the city of Fuzhou in Fujian Province, located on the south-west coast of the country. Just a few photos exist, but they're enough to determin the boldness of the project.

Car News China reports that these shiny gold-colored coins are five mao pieces, which are equivalent to half a yuan. So the whole "money wrap" only cost 5,000 yuan, which converts to €640 or $810.

According to them, the Beetle belongs to a "middle aged woman", who saved all the coins over a period of 5 years and had them applied over a protective vinyl wrap. Even the gas cap and the mirrors were targeted.

While getting scratches from bicycles and road debris is a thing of the past, the owner of this Beetle now needs to be worried about thieves and vandals, as more than a few coins have already been pulled off the car.

Money-covered cars – a global obsession

As strange as the Beetle is, it's not the first time we've seen such a creation. Earlier this year, a Nissan Leaf electric car was covered in 50,000 two pence Sterling coins from the UK and 50,000 two cent euro coins from Europe in order to celebrate the 100,000th example sold. Together, the coins increased the weight of the car by a massive 504 kilograms (1,111 lbs).

Back in 2013, an Mk3 Range Rover SUV was also covered in coins by some fine folks from the United Arab Emirates, followed soon after by a Mercedes G-Class.

That said, strangest things have happened to a Volkswagen Beetle. 53-year-old Momir Bojic, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, made headlines a few years ago by recreating the classic version of the Bug almost entirely out of oak.

Carbon Fiber Diffuser for BMW’s 2015 M3

In the world of BMW tuning, there are a few acronyms that pop out here and there. Amongst them you’ll find PSI (Precision Sport Industries) but also RKP and EAS. Those last two are the culprits here as the two companies joined forces to show you how good a new carbon fiber rear diffuser looks like on the 2015 M3 and M4 models.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last half a year or if you just don’t really care about cars in general, you probably know what BMW did with the 2015 M3 and M4 models. That’s right, they brought back that M spirit we all love and missed for quite some time.

As we found in our own M4 review, the engine, chassis, weight and even electric steering are absolutely just right, in the given circumstances where the Bavarian manufacturer has to abide some really stringent legislation.

Moving back to the RKP part of the story, the company released its own take on a rear diffuser and it’s looking absolutely great. Made exclusively out of carbon fiber, it’s the result of 3 months of hard work in the lab to get the perfect fit and finish.

Unlike the BMW M Performance diffuser, RKP’s fins extend all the way to the edge of the diffuser, giving them a much more noticeable look in all of the right areas. Available in either 1x1 or 2x2 weave patterns.

The price for what you’re going to look at in the photo gallery rises to $1,176 in the US. European availability hasn’t been confirmed yet. To get the end of your car to look like the one in the gallery, you’ll also need iND’s black coated exhaust tips that will set you back another $450.

Want to get your hands on an Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe?

2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe

Want to get your hands on an Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe? With the new C63 sedan already released, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the old model won't be around for much longer. But according to Car and Driver, the existing coupe will stick around for a little longer than we might have thought.

Apparently because the new model has only thus far been released in sedan and Euro-only wagon forms, the existing coupe will stay on the market – including the North American one – through the spring of 2015. After that, it's anyone's guess whether a new coupe will be introduced, but we're hoping it will.

The strategy looks similar to what Cadillac did with its V8 muscle coupe, keeping the CTS-V Coupe around alongside the new CTS sedan – which has still yet to be released in CTS-V form, even if the new Vsport seemingly comes close.

Ariel Atom gets even more insane with 3S

Ariel Atom 3S

As far as performance machines go, they don't come much more focused than the Ariel Atom. And they keep getting more extreme in their performance capabilities, leading up to the latest version you see here.

Called the Atom 3S, it's based on the latest third-generation track toy, but comes packaged with all the best equipment. Its 2.4-liter Honda engine has been turbocharged up to 365 horsepower, which makes it the most powerful Atom short of the bonkers 500-hp V8 model. It's also got a new five-stage traction control system adjustable from inside the cockpit, Alcon four-piston brake calipers gripping two-piece floating discs and adjustable dampers for the F1-style pushrod suspension. It even comes packaged with the full glass windscreen and LCD cockpit display, and buyers will be able to choose between three transmissions: standard, close ratio or a new Sadev six-speed sequential gearbox.

All of that adds up to blistering performance figures: 0-60 comes in under 2.8 seconds, and the quarter mile is covered in an estimated 10.7 seconds. As you can see from the video below, the Atom 3S will even cover the full course at Virginia International Raceway in a blistering 1:58, making it quicker than the Atom spec racer and about on pace with a Formula Ford single-seater. Best of all, it's available in the US for under $90k, but if that seems too rich for your blood, you can spec out your own Atom 3 starting at $64,500.

Test-drive: BMW X6

2015 BMW X6

Most everyone would agree that BMW offers a range of very attractive and well-proportioned coupes, sedans, crossovers and wagons. Yet there is one member of its family that has always struck us as a bit odd: the X6.

Proudly coined "The world's first Sports Activity Coupe" by its German maker, the X6 features a wedge-shaped body with a characteristic sloping roofline that appears to squash the heads of its second-row occupants. The crossover rides high off the ground, with a pronounced gap between its chassis and oversized wheel/tire package, capped by short overhangs on both ends. Although curious to the eyes, its overall styling is masculine, and its stance aggressive.

Whether you consider the X6 to be attractive or an eyesore – opinions seem about equally divided – there is nobody at BMW questioning its business model. As of today, the automaker has sold more than 260,000 copies of its five-door crossover, which is why it has flown us to Spartanburg, SC, to sample its second-generation 2015 BMW X6.

X6 owners will have no trouble distinguishing the second-gen crossover from its predecessor. But many will have a difficult time telling the two apart.

Spartanburg is the home of BMW US Manufacturing, where the automaker has been making a variety of models since 1994, including its current run of X3, X5 and X6 utilities (the plant is currently ramping up for the X4 and is slated for X7 production next year). The state-of-the-art facility is the sole assembly plant for the X6, meaning its right- and left-hand drive production is shipped around the globe.
2015 BMW X6

Current X6 owners, or those very familiar with the brand, will have no trouble distinguishing the second-generation crossover from its predecessor. But many, ourselves included, will have a difficult time telling the two apart – even BMW admits that its all-new design is evolutionary, not revolutionary.

A spotter's guide to identify the new model would point out the more chiseled front end, with a bold grille that nearly tilts forward (recalling BMW's famed, long-gone "shark nose" treatment). The sides are adorned with gills, dubbed Air Breathers, which are a functional part of the Air Curtains which improve aerodynamics around the front wheels. The rear hatch features a prominent horizontal chrome slat that visually breaks up its expansive surface area.

Diet or no, nobody is going to call this 5,170-pound crossover willowy.

The X6 again shares platforms with the X5, which was redesigned for the 2014 model year. The basic architecture is a steel unibody, with a heavy mix of ultra-high tensile steel in the structure, thermoplastics front fenders, an aluminum hood and magnesium in the instrument panel support, all of which are incorporated to reduce curb weight and improve balance. The new X6 arrives with more equipment, yet it's lighter than its predecessor. Diet or no, nobody is going to call this 5,170-pound crossover willowy.

BMW has announced three different models for the US market: X6 sDrive35i, X6 xDrive35i and X6 xDrive50i. The X6 sDrive35i (rear-wheel drive, six-cylinder engine) and xDrive35i (all-wheel drive, six-cylinder engine) are powered by the automaker's familiar N55 powerplant, which has been in use since 2009. The 3.0-liter inline-six has a single turbocharger (BMW's marketing team confusingly calls it a "TwinPower Turbo" because it has a twin-scroll housing) to deliver 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque on premium fuel. Mated to a standard ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic (8HP45), it will reportedly sprint to 60 miles per hour in about 6.0 seconds, slightly quicker than its predecessor.

We have yet to drive the second-generation six-cylinder X6, as the model faces a delayed introduction. Instead, we find ourselves discussing its big brother, the eight-cylinder version set to go on sale in early December.

2015 BMW X6

The turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 creates enough thrust to launch the two-and-a-half ton crossover to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

The X6 xDrive50i is fitted with BMW's N63 engine, upgraded this year with Valvetronic variable valve timing. The TwinPower Turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine features two turbochargers, which are both shoehorned within the V-area of the cylinder banks, to generate 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. Also mated to a standard eight-speed automatic transmission (the slightly more robust 8HP70), the package creates enough thrust to launch the two-and-a-half ton crossover to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.

It's the latter that's been fitted to our test subject, a Mineral White Metallic X6 xDrive50i with Cognac Dakota leather interior. Thanks to an extensive list of options, including most of the line's available handling and driving assistance packages, the $72,900 base price of our European-specification tester ballooned to over $90,000.

Located very conveniently next door to the sprawling BMW US Manufacturing facility is the BMW Performance Center, a customer-oriented training facility with a paved 1.7-mile racing circuit, wet skidpad and off-road course. Rather that hit the public highways, we choose to run its full gamut for our first orientation.

Those familiar with BMW's X5 will find the X6's cabin a near clone. That's a compliment, as the layout is both attractive and ergonomically efficient, featuring easy-to-use round knobs for the audio and climate controls. The upgraded Dakota leather is buttery soft – some of the nicest hides we have ever felt – and the seats are extraordinarily comfortable.

The X6 has always been challenged in terms of utility and the new model is no different.

The X6 has always been challenged in terms of utility (BMW didn't even offer a proper five-passenger version until three years after its launch), and the new model is no different. In fact, the 2015's rear cargo area is just 20.5 cubic feet (expandable to 53.9 cubic feet with the 40/20/40 split rear seats folded flat). That's well short of its predecessor's 25.6/59.7 cubic-feet ratings, let alone the space afforded by the 2015 X5 (23/66). At least the power-assisted tailgate has been programmed to open and close at the touch of a button, and V8 models get a hands-free system, with sensors beneath the rear bumper to detect foot movements, as standard equipment.

Outward visibility is surprisingly strong, however, with the view from the front seat commanding and tall. The only reminder of the X6's unique styling from the inside is found in the rearview mirror, which presents a restricted view of the world behind. The second row is visually a bit tighter than that of the X5, but it's not actually so: max second-row headroom is listed at 38.8 inches in either vehicle and rear legroom is actually more accommodating at 37.9 inches versus the X5's 36.6 inches. With this second-generation X6, BMW seems to have prioritized cabin comfort over cargo capacity, a decision that suits your author's six-foot, two-inch frame just fine.

The Performance Center's roadcourse is tight and narrow, which means it isn't the ideal match for a big, muscular crossover with a gorilla's stance (the X6 is a half-inch longer and two inches wider than the X5, but also two inches shorter). Nevertheless, we ran the circuit nearly a half-dozen times toggling through each of the BMW's Driving Dynamic modes: Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus using the rocker switch to the left of the shifter. Each mode modifies the throttle response, transmission logic, climate control operation, steering weight and adaptive suspension.

2015 BMW X6

Heavy cornering in the hefty BMW becomes a futile battle, one that physics always wins.

The new X6, like all modern BMW models, is competent on a road course. The Eco Pro and Comfort modes (both self-explanatory) are best left for highways, so we pre-select Sport for our first laps. Driving at eight-tenths, body roll is minimal and the wide tires (Continental ContiSportContact sized 275/40-20 and 315/35-20) hold on tenaciously. All of the credit goes to the well-engineered double-wishbone front suspension and the independent integral rear suspension, with automatic self-leveling air bags. Our test car boasted active roll stabilization systems, which keeps body roll to a minimum.

Push to nine-tenths or greater, and the X6 starts to plow, yielding heavy, then severe, understeer. Those front tires are wide, but much of the 5,170-pound curb weight (weight distribution is 51.5/48.5 percent) is shifted to the outside front tire under heavy cornering loads or during trail braking. Heavy cornering in the hefty BMW becomes a futile battle, one that physics always wins. Optimally, the corner is entered at a much slower pace and heavy throttle is applied before the apex. Under these conditions, BMW's Dynamic Performance Control, an electronic system integrated into the rear differential, works with the xDrive all-wheel drive to expertly split the power between the rear wheels for torque vectoring control. The X6 shoots of the corner, with its rear tires skillfully putting down the horsepower.

The twin-turbo V8, which is remarkably smooth and puts out a wondrously deep growl under acceleration without any piped-in engine noises, effortlessly brings the X6 to speed between the short straights. Thankfully, the single-piston disc brakes bleed off the speed with ease, although we'd prefer a bit firmer pedal feel. Unfortunately, the X6's electric power steering with its Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance, falls on the numb side of the scale. It is accurate and nicely weight (as expected, effort is heavier in Sport and Sport Plus), but it still feels disconnected and isolated.

2015 BMW X6

It may remain visually divisive, but its second execution is unquestionably luxurious, capable and commendable.

Off-road, the X6 is an overachiever – meaning no owner will subject it to the type of mild torture we put it through. Whether traversing a 19-inch deep water trap, climbing and descending steep grades (a new camera on the crossover's nose takes the white knuckles out of extreme angles) or bounding over boulders, standard xDrive, Hill Descent Control and 8.3-inches of ground clearance make easy work of unpaved surfaces.

Driving the all-new X6 xDrive50i on public roads reveals very few flaws or irritating character traits. The driving position is comfortable, the chassis is vault-solid and wind noise is minimal (BMW's engineers are deservedly proud of its low 0.32 Cd). Predictably, of course, the ultra-wide tire contact patches do generate road noise which increases or decreases noticeably based on the smoothness of the surface. That said, the X6 is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace in urban and country settings, with occupants coddled inside a very luxurious cabin and the driver content in knowing that sports car potential is but a press of the accelerator away.

We can't make a rational argument for choosing the individualistic X6 over its more practical sibling, the X5 – neither can BMW, says our money. Yet nobody can fault the German automaker for offering the interesting crossover considering its consistent sales. Acura tried to enter this niche four years ago, with its ZDX, but the resculpted MDX didn't have the cachet to overcome its limitations. For now, the X6 has the crossover coupe market to itself, but that will change in the near future, as the Mercedes-Benz has signaled that it will offer a production version of its ML-Class-based Concept Coupe showcar next year, likely badged GLE. Players may come and go, but for the moment, BMW owns the unusual Sports Activity Coupe segment with its all-new 2015 X6. Its encore presentation may remain visually divisive, but its second execution is unquestionably luxurious, capable and commendable.

Lincoln and its latest campaign to promote the new MKC

Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln MKC spot

You would think that commercial being ridiculed across the Internet would be an advertising executive's worst nightmare, but that's not necessarily the case. At least not when it comes to Lincoln and its latest campaign to promote the new MKC.

The campaign features Matthew McConaughey channeling his characters from True Detective and The Lincoln Lawyer, and was quickly spoofed by both Conan O'Brien and Ellen DeGeneres. But instead of shaking their heads in dismay at the comedy talk-show hosts' take on their ad, Lincoln and its advertising firm Hudson Rouge welcome the free publicity.

"We're flattered. Just to get out into the public mind with parodies says you've achieved a certain amount of notoriety," Hudson Rouge CCO Jon Pearce told Automotive News. "It's hard to put a dollar amount on earned media. We couldn't ask for better."

While the two original ads themselves garnered a combined 677,000 views on YouTube, Conan's spoof attracted 219,000 views, and Ellen's another 3.1 million. We've included both spoofs below for your viewing pleasure. The social-media popularity has undoubtedly garnered some buzz for Lincoln, which has fallen from #1 status among luxury auto marques in the US back in 1998 to eighth place this year.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is auctioning off the first of these all-electric cars in the U.S.

2015 Volkswagen e-Golf

Looking to get your hands on a 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf? Are you always an early-adopter? Well, VW is auctioning off the first of these all-electric cars in the U.S. and proceeds from the sale will help an environmental charity.

Not only will the winner be able to drive green but they’ll also benefit an outfit called Global Green USA, a national environmental non-profit organization that works in a variety of different ways to make the world a better place. Some of its signature programs include helping rebuild cities affected by climate change, places like New Orleans, Louisiana and parts of both New York and New Jersey.

The 2014 Volkswagen e-Golf is a pure-electric hatchback that produces ZERO tailpipe emissions. It features a 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor that delivers a maximum of 115 hp. But don’t let that modest figure fool you, the torque it produces is impressive, measuring 199 lb-ft.

The e-Golf is set to go on sale in the U.S. this November. Base price is around $35,445 for a nicely equipped SEL Premium model. But if you want to park one in your driveway sooner than next month you can place a bid. They’ll accept offers until 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time on October 29.

The 2015 Ford F-150 is a big deal

2015 Ford F-150 Truck of Texas

The 2015 Ford F-150 is a big deal. This totally redesigned truck sports a lineup of powerful yet efficient engines, class-leading technologies and an aluminum body that cuts a massive amount of weight. Underscoring its importance this pickup was just named the “Truck of Texas.”

This is the most prestigious award handed out by TAWA, the Texas Auto Writers Association. And they ought to know a thing or two about pickups. The Lone Star state is the largest market for these hard-working vehicles in America.

At TAWA’s annual Truck Rodeo the 2015 F-150 faced off against 75 vehicles hailing from 18 different brands. That’s some tough competition. But this win is another notch in Ford’s gunstock. In fact nine of the last 12 Truck of Texas awards have gone to the F-Series.

Beyond this, the 2015 Transit van also drove away with the Commercial Vehicle of Texas honor and the F-150’s aluminum bodywork won TAWA’s Best Technology Feature award.

The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 37 consecutive years and the best-selling vehicle in the United States for 32. With the 2015 F-150’s extensive updates it looks like the brand will continue that success story.

Acura Considers Making All-Wheel Drive

Acura All-Wheel Drive

It’s no secret Honda’s Acura division is struggling. For years they’ve had difficulty gaining real traction in the market and 2014 is no different, with year-over-year deliveries falling 1 percent through September. But this slippery situation could change if they borrow a strategy from one of their rivals.

Subaru is famous for a few things, quality, quirkiness and of course an undying love for all-wheel drive. And that last point is something Acura’s exploring. The premium brand wants to make this traction-enhancing technology a centerpiece of its lineup.

All-wheel drive is currently offered on half the vehicles they sell but it could become standard across their product portfolio in years to come. And this change could literally take many turns of the calendar since Acura’s lineup is quite fresh right now. Re-engineering vehicles to feature all-wheel drive would probably have to wait until the next product cycle.

But is a focus on all-wheel drive going to differentiate Acura sufficiently from key rivals? Perhaps not. Aside from Subaru, which admittedly isn’t a direct competitor, nearly 60 percent of BMWs sold in the U.S. this year feature the technology and 90 percent of Audis. The market for all-wheel-drive luxury cars may be saturated.

In addition to this drivetrain switch, Acura executives are also planning more powerful engines, but don’t get your hopes up. A thundering V8 or even a proper rear-wheel-drive architecture is most likely out of the question.
